Rock climbing in Montanejos

Rock climbing in Montanejos

Montanejos is a small village in the mountains of inland Castellón, about an hour and a half from Valencia, built around a limestone gorge that holds one of the largest sport climbing areas in eastern Spain. Around 2,000 routes spread over more than 60 sectors, from friendly grade IV slabs to 9th grade tufa caves, plus a handful of multi-pitch lines. And when your skin gives up, the village has natural hot springs to soak in.

The climbing

The rock is steep, technical limestone. Most sectors sit close to the road with short approaches, and the spread of grades is unusually democratic: there are whole walls of pleasant vertical climbing in the 5s and low 6s, sectors packed with quality 6b to 7c, and seriously steep caves with sustained high-end routes. Some of the best tufa climbing in the region is here.

Because sectors face in every direction along the gorge, you can almost always find sun in winter and shade in the warmer months, which is what keeps Montanejos climbable most of the year.

Season

Autumn to spring is prime time. Summer is workable in the shady sectors and early mornings, but the best conditions run from October to May. The village sits inland, so winter days are sunnier and drier than on the coast.

Getting there and staying

Montanejos is roughly 90 km from Valencia. The drive takes about an hour and a half, and having a car is the practical way to move between sectors, although many walls are walkable from the village. Montanejos itself is a spa town with accommodation, restaurants and the famous Fuente de los Baños springs, which stay at a pleasant temperature all year.
